Street Car In Communist Ruled Prague, ca 1977

In 1977 Prague had 30 tram routes, the fleet consisted of 984 vehicles most of which were T3’s that were built by Tatra, and there were 125km of operational tracks.  The photograph of this streetcar was taken on Letenska Street in the historic center of Prague, Malá Strana, in October of 1977 when Czechoslovakia was still under strict communist rule.  At the time Prague had approximately 133 trams of this type and they were in regular service from March 1952 to January 1983.

Renowned Czech industrial designer and graphic artist Frantisek Kardaus designed trams like this, as well as other streetcar models and automobiles.  The current fleet of trams in Prague numbers close to 1000 making it one of the largest tram systems in the world.

Tatra is the oldest vehicle factory in Central Europe and the second oldest in the world.  The company produced its first passenger car in 1897 and first truck in 1898. Over 40 historic mass transit vehicles like the one in this photograph are currently on permanent display at the Public Transportation Museum in Prague.
