Carol Channing, 1921-2019
American actress, singer, dancer, and comedienne, Carol Channing is best known for her starring roles in the Broadway musicals Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1949), The Vamp (1956), as Dolly Gallagher Levi in Hello Dolly! (1964), and for the film Thoroughly Modern Millie (1967). Hello, Dolly! ran for 2,844 performances and was the longest-running musical in Broadway history at the time. Channing performed in 1,273 consecutive performances. The show grossed $25 million while on Broadway plus another $15 million on its 25-city tour in 1978.
During the 1950s and 1960s Channing performed regularly on television variety shows such as What’s My Line, The Milton Berle Show, The Ed Sullivan Show, Love Boat, Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In, and many more. Channing was the first solo artist to perform at a Super Bowl halftime show when she sang When the Saints Go Marching In at Super Bowl IV when the Minnesota Vikings played the Kansas City Chiefs at Tulane Stadium in New Orleans on January 11, 1970. Prior to that time, only college marching bands performed. Two years later Channing performed again at Super Bowl VI, again at Tulane Stadium on January 16, 1972 when she sang Hello, Dolly! Channing received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on November 30, 1977 and a star on the Palm Springs Walk of Stars on October 2, 2010.
