KERRI HOFFMAN
The power of sculpture lies in that they coexist in the space we occupy. Kerri Hoffman’s Torso Sculptures have a commanding presence that is formulated in the hidden chambers of her brain, to which only she holds the key.
Working in her studio till the early morning hours, Kerri draws from the many items she has collected over time to create her sculptures. There are old piano keys, sunglass parts, discarded crystals from chandeliers, endless rows of organic materials like braided twine, vintage matchbook covers, and salvaged metal, fabric remnants, leather, hand-made paper, just to name a few.
Using these unorthodox materials, she begins constructing brilliant sculptures, which begin with a torso created out of resin and sculpting materials, brushed, and dripped with acrylic and layered in lacquer. From here, Hoffman’s true genius begins. The unorthodox materials become something unexpected. It is this creative process that is at the core of her talent.
Your imagination can run wild with each of Kerri’s pieces. At close examination of her sculpture titled “Burn,” viewers will find a breastplate created out of beveled crystals from an old chandelier and a belt constructed out of interlocking metal wire tubing. For the artist “Burn” is a social statement about women today. The mixed media elements represent ‘armor.’ Armor signifies beauty, power, self-confidence, and all else that shields women, as they battle to secure their place in an ever-changing and often competitive world.
Viewers will no doubt experience something quite different from the artist’s vision, which is exactly what a dynamic work of art should do, but one thing is clear, Kerri Hoffman’s one-of-a-kind pieces are a challenge to the naked eye and will stimulate your senses.
